Grad ’77 David Dupuis

I graduated from P.S.S. in 1977. Though I took Art with Mr. Hugh Niblock in Grade 9, I barely passed, bored with exploring all the different mediums he taught. I didn’t want to do all that other stuff. I just wanted to draw, freehand! Though I must admit years later when I started to sketch my history books, I certainly used his techniques, taught so many years before. Then I wondered if maybe I should have paid more attention back then. My ink sketches for my books got the job done.
I credit English teacher Brian Quealey with encouraging me to continue writing after he had graded four of my Grade 10 essays rather highly saying: “The mark is an affirmation of your writing style. I strongly encourage you to continue writing.”
I continued to dabble in writing until self-publishing my first book of Penetanguishene history and ink sketches in 1988, then a history-sketches book about the Martyrs Shrine in 1989 and just continued, publishing ten books.
I don’t sketch anymore but have collaborated with artist Del Taylor on a book about the legend of Kitchikewana in 2000, collaborated with Del and renown local photographer Mike Odesse (another P.S.S. grad) in 2001 on a Ste. Anne’s Parish coffee table book and am about to publish my third hockey biography this fall, the second biography with researcher extraordinaire Waxy Gregoire, a 1971 graduate of P.S.S. himself.
I am a former Chairman of the Penetanguishene Centennial Museum, former Chairman of the Rendezvous Champlain Committee and am presently Chairman of the Penetanguishene Sports Hall of Fame.

I graduated in 1980. I have loved photography ever since I bought my first camera at 19. I joined the Army shortly after though and 10 years as a soldier in the Armoured Corps and 10 years as a Logistics Officer (with 3 years of University in between) didn’t allow much time to pursue Art. After retiring to Cobble Hill, BC on Vancouver Island, I can dedicate more time to the things I enjoy. I find inspiration in Coastal landscapes, seascapes and wild life. I am currently looking into pet photography.

Grad ’72 Lu Robitaille

Lu’s deep feelings for the Georgian Bay area live in the art she creates; her rocks and water reflect the love and warmth she has for this unique part of Canada. Lu worked for several years in oils, but has developed a new style and format based on watercolour for her medium.

My work is inspired by the spectacular vastness of Georgian Bay and its surroundings.  The ruggedness, changing weather patterns and other elements drive me to photograph from different vantage points.  I then return to my studio where I relive the moments of fieldwork, thoroughly examining and creating its  purest version. Unlike traditional water colours, I begin with a mildly wet brush for the less detailed portions and proceed to a dryer brush using opaque vivid colours to articulate the splendedness of a tree, rock, or flower.

I have always had a passion for drawing and painting. I received my first art award in grade 3. In high school I continued to study art with Mr. Hugh Niblock. It was in his class that discovered my love of painting!! I won the art award in grades 9, 10 and 11. I also designed the album cover for the PSS Junior & Senior Band LP which we recorded in the music portable with Mr. Coull.
A few years ago I was singing and playing guitar with my dear friend Deb Grise at The Quest Gallery in Midland, Ontario. I was approached by Mr. Niblock and his wife Gale. I recall being made to sit on a stool and model as Mr. Niblock quickly demonstrated how to paint a portrait. I had no idea that he had brought the painting home and completed it. He gifted it to me that evening at Quest. He quietly asked if I was still painting and I assured him that I was. The portrait now adorns the walls of my small studio. A small reminder of the quiet man that I so admired and who taught me the love of painting!
Today I work as an administrative assistant during the day. But in my off
hours I continue to paint and am trying to build my career in fine arts.  I am an impressionist artist and paint in both watercolour and oils. I love to capture the beautiful landscapes of Georgian Bay and its surrounding countryside and have paintings in private collections in Canada and Germany.
Recently I discovered the joys and challenges of painting en pleinair capturing flora and landscapes in oil on canvas.
You may see me in a field, on an island in Georgian Bay or on the side of the road with paint brush in hand.
I reside in Midland, Ontario with my husband and two cats.

You can see some of my work on Fine Art America or my website.

Grad ’79 Therese Maurice

Therese attended PSS during the years 1974 – 1979.
I grew up in the Village of Lafontaine. I graduated from the 5 year program.
I was a student of Hugh Niblock.
Once I graduated from PSS (ESPSS), I went on to George Brown College and pursued my art career thru their Graphic Design program.  I graduated from George Brown College in 1982 with a Graphic Design Technician degree.
I am presently a Real Estate Broker – working at BUY THE SHORES of Georgian Bay Reatly Inc. in the Midland – Penetang – Tiny & Tay Township district.  I am the Broker of Record for the company, which we opened in June 2014.
I am lucky that I am able to use my artistic talent in my professional career.
I draw my own graphic – which appears weekly, in the local real estate paper.
Some of my art work is out an about town – Jim Lavin Electrical logo – the little “bonhomme” is my design.  He was one of my first designs, and he is still using my art work!  His logo is recognizable, known and visible on his work vehicles.
My greatest pride is the mural I painted on the exterior wall of the Penetang Legion Br. 68.  I painted the mural in 2010 – the only thing I need to finish on that, is put my signature under the painting.

Three and a half decades later, the only thing I remember doing in Mr. Niblock’s art classes is drawing that long road to nowhere, with trees on the left and hydro pole on the right… perspective is what he called it.  Make so much sense now.

I’ve always loved taking pictures, but in the last few years have made a business out of it. My work is available at many local businesses, as well as galleries in Midland and North Bay, on my website  www.marjdubeauphotography.com/
https://www.facebook.com/MarjDubeauPhotography1/?fref=ts and on Fine Art America and of course in my home gallery at 55 Balm Beach Rd E, Perkinsfield, Ontario by appointment or by chance.

I like to capture the beautiful thing that Canada has to offer – landscapes, shorelines, wildlife, plants, macro; the little things that surround us that we are often too busy to take the time to see.
